Young athletes in the U.S. face a "culture of resistance" to reporting when they might have a concussion and to complying with treatment plans, which could endanger their well-being, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council. The report provides a broad examination of concussions in a variety of youth sports with athletes aged 5 to 21.
An Institute of Medicine committee studying sports-related concussions in youth will hold a workshop to gather data and perspectives from experts and stakeholders, including health care providers, coaches, and parents. Topics will include the effectiveness of protective equipment, the role of sports rules, and physical training-related concussions in military personnel.
The Institute of Medicine and National Research Council will hold the first meeting for a new study on sports-related concussions in youth that will review the science on concussions, including risk factors, long-term consequences, and the effectiveness of protective devices and equipment among other topics.
